Guanajuato is a central Mexican state known as the birthplace of the country’s independence. Its namesake capital is home to the Alhóndiga de Granaditas granary, where the first battle with 19th-century Spain was fought. The former mining town is also famous for its hilly, cobbled alleys lined with colonial architecture and picturesque garden plazas like the Jardín de La Unión. The Callejoneadas are nocturnal tours through the narrow alleys of the historic center of Guanajuato, in which a group of musicians and singers known as "estudiantina" accompany the participants while they visit the most emblematic places of the city. During the tour, the members of the estudiantina perform traditional Mexican songs while telling stories and anecdotes about the city and their own experiences as students. Participants often dress in typical regional attire, such as hats and ponchos. In addition to being a popular tourist activity, the Callejoneadas also have historical and cultural value, as they date back to the time when Guanajuato was an important mining city in the 19th century. At that time, university students formed musical groups to liven up gatherings and celebrations for the mine workers.
